How much does an AI customer service chatbot cost in the UK?

Short answer

An off-the-shelf AI customer service chatbot costs $0.99 per resolved conversation on Intercom Fin, or $1.50 to $2.00 per automated resolution on Zendesk, plus seats from $19 a month (US prices, November 2026). Most UK SMEs pay £5,000 to £20,000 for a custom chatbot, per Softomate's 2026 guide, plus £370 to £1,080 a month to run and support it. Model usage costs about $22 a month for 2,000 short conversations on Claude Sonnet 5.5.

Custom chatbot build costs in the UK

Most UK SMEs pay £5,000 to £20,000 for a custom AI chatbot, according to Softomate's 2026 cost guide, and each integration adds about £800 to £3,000. Its published price list, updated on 1 October 2026, gives these starting points before VAT.

BuildSetup fromMonthly from
FAQ chatbot on an existing platform£1,500£99
WhatsApp AI setup£2,500£99
Custom AI chatbot£5,000£299
RAG company knowledge assistant£6,000£399
Custom chatbot with CRM integration£6,500£399
AI customer service integration£6,500£399

Softaims, which also builds chatbots, gives similar bands (August 2026). It puts a basic AI chatbot at £5,000 to £10,000 over 3 to 4 weeks, an integrated chatbot at £12,000 to £30,000 over 6 to 8 weeks, and a bespoke platform from £35,000.

No independent survey covers UK chatbot build prices, so these ranges come from agencies that sell the work. A RAG assistant answers from your own documents. For whether you need that or a fine-tuned model, see custom LLM or RAG.

Running costs per conversation

The model costs about a cent per conversation. Hosting, support and the work of keeping answers current cost more.

Worked example with 2,000 conversations a month

Assume each support conversation uses 3,000 input tokens (the question, the instructions and the retrieved help articles) and 500 output tokens. That is an assumption, and longer chats with more history use more.

  • On Claude Sonnet 5.5, at $2 input and $10 output per million tokens, 3,000 input tokens cost $0.006 and 500 output tokens cost $0.005. That is $0.011 a conversation, or $22 a month.
  • On Claude Haiku 5.5, at $0.10 and $0.50, it is $0.0003 plus $0.00025, or $0.00055 a conversation. That comes to $1.10 a month.
  • On Claude Opus 5.5, at $4 and $20, it is $0.012 plus $0.01, or $0.022 a conversation. That comes to $44 a month.

Outcome pricing looks different at the same volume, in the same currency. If 1,000 of those 2,000 conversations count as Fin outcomes, Intercom charges $990 a month before seats. At Zendesk's committed rate, 1,000 automated resolutions cost $1,500. Per conversation, Fin's $0.99 is 90 times Sonnet 5.5's $0.011, though a custom build adds the build fee, hosting and maintenance.

Softomate's own running estimates for a UK SME chatbot are higher than the raw token maths. It puts hosting at £50 to £200 a month, AI usage at £20 to £80 a month for 500 conversations and £200 to £500 for 5,000, and an optional support retainer at £300 to £800. Its total is about £370 to £1,080 a month. Measure your own token counts in a pilot before you budget.

How often AI chatbots resolve questions

Vendor-published resolution rates run from 42% to 79%, and the few independent figures are lower, near 38%. Vendors define "resolved" differently, so compare like with like.

  • Intercom says Fin averages 76% across 12,000+ customers, with many above 85%. This is a vendor claim.
  • A customer quoted on Intercom's pricing page reports about a 79% resolution rate with Fin. This is a vendor-published testimonial.
  • Superframeworks reports an independent 500-ticket small-business test that landed at 38%, and puts Intercom's own case studies at 42% to 50% (June 2026).

Customers stay wary. A Gartner survey reported on 9 July 2024 found that 64% of customers would prefer companies didn't use AI for customer service. The top worry was that AI makes it harder to reach a person, at 60%, followed by job losses at 46% and wrong answers at 42%. A visible route to a person answers the biggest objection.

Ask any vendor or builder how they define a resolution. Then measure it on your own tickets after launch, counting only conversations where the customer confirmed the fix.

How Yarigai builds a support chatbot

Yarigai builds support agents that answer from a client's own docs, inside the client's own helpdesk and accounts. The client owns the code, the data and the accounts from day one. AI and hosting bills are paid at cost, so the token maths above is what the client pays the model provider.

Every project starts with a free 30-minute scope call on Google Meet. A blueprint follows, which takes about a week and is credited to the build. It includes a clickable prototype, the monthly running cost, a fixed price and the payback maths against what support costs today, such as seats and per-resolution fees. A person approves anything that sends money, emails a customer or deletes data, so refunds stay with a person.

Yarigai quotes a fixed price after the one-week blueprint. Its guarantee reads "If the build isn't profitable for you, we won't build it." If the build doesn't come out ahead within the first year, Yarigai doesn't take the job. More on AI customer support.

Disclosure rules in the UK and EU

From 2 August 2026, Article 50(1) of the EU AI Act requires the provider of a chatbot that talks to people in the EU to make sure they are told they are dealing with an AI. A UK business that builds its own bot is its provider. The duty does not apply where the AI is obvious to a reasonably well-informed person. This guide found no UK law, as of November 2026, that requires a chatbot to say it is AI. UK GDPR still applies to the personal data in every chat.

The business also owns what its bot says. In Moffatt v. Air Canada (2024 BCCRT 149), a Canadian tribunal held Air Canada liable for wrong bereavement-fare advice from its website chatbot. It rejected the argument that the chatbot was responsible for its own actions and awarded CA$812.02. It is a small-claims ruling and does not bind UK courts.

A sensible setup for a UK firm:

  • Label the bot as AI in the chat window.
  • Offer a route to a person in every conversation.
  • Use a paid API tier with a data processing agreement, and check where chat data is stored.
  • Answer only from approved documents, and have the bot say it doesn't know when the answer isn't there.

When a chatbot is the wrong answer

A chatbot is the wrong buy when the questions are few, complex or emotional, or when the real problem is a broken process.

  • At a handful of tickets a day, a £5,000 build plus £299 a month takes a long time to pay back. Tidio's free plan or Fin's per-outcome pricing costs less to try first.
  • Complaints, disputes and anything with legal weight need a person, not a bot.
  • Refund rules, prices and policies that change every week need one strict source of truth, or the bot will contradict your own policy pages, as Air Canada's did.
  • If most tickets ask where an order is, better tracking emails remove the question.
  • A bot that answers from your docs is only as good as the docs, so fix the help centre first.

Phone calls are a separate build. See what an AI receptionist costs.

Common questions

What is a good resolution rate for an AI chatbot?

Independent figures sit near 38%, and Intercom's own case studies run 42% to 50%, per Superframeworks (June 2026). Intercom claims a 76% average across 12,000+ Fin customers. Count a resolution only when the customer confirms the fix, because some vendors count a customer who simply stops replying.

How long does it take to build a custom chatbot in the UK?

Softaims puts a basic AI chatbot at 3 to 4 weeks and an integrated chatbot at 6 to 8 weeks (August 2026). A bespoke platform takes 3 to 6 months or more. The integrated tier takes about twice as long as the basic one.

Do I have to tell customers they are talking to a chatbot?

If the bot serves people in the EU, its provider must make that clear under Article 50(1) of the EU AI Act from 2 August 2026, unless it is obvious. This guide found no equivalent UK rule as of November 2026. Labelling the bot is still the safe default, because Gartner found 64% of customers would prefer companies didn't use AI for service.

Can an AI chatbot hand over to a person?

Yes, and it should. Intercom counts a Fin workflow that ends in a handoff as an outcome, so a handed-off conversation still costs $0.99. In a custom build, the handoff is a rule you own, with no per-outcome fee.

Is Intercom Fin cheaper than a custom chatbot?

At low volume, usually yes, because Fin has no build fee. At 1,000 outcomes a month Fin's usage alone is $990 a month, while the model cost of 2,000 short conversations on Claude Sonnet 5.5 is about $22. A custom build adds a build fee from about £5,000 and hosting of £50 to £200 a month, so the answer depends on your volume.

How much does a WhatsApp AI chatbot cost in the UK?

Softomate lists WhatsApp AI setup from £2,500 plus £99 a month (October 2026). Platform fees and usage, such as messages and AI tokens, are billed separately on its list.
