## DIY website builder prices in the UK
Wix starts at £9 a month, Squarespace costs £14.40 to £106.80 a month and a Shopify store £19 to £344 a month, as of November 2026. Annual billing is cheaper on all three.

| Plan | Per month, billed annually | Per month, billed monthly | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wix, cheapest plan | £9 | £11.50 | Startups.co.uk, March 2026 |
| Squarespace Basic | £14.40 | £19.20 | Includes VAT; 2% fee on store sales |
| Squarespace Core | £20.40 | £28.80 | Includes VAT; 0% store fee |
| Squarespace Plus | £34.80 | £43.20 | Includes VAT |
| Squarespace Advanced | £94.80 | £106.80 | Includes VAT |
| Shopify Basic | £19 | £25 | Online card rate 2% + 25p |
| Shopify Grow | £49 | £65 | Online card rate 1.7% + 25p |
| Shopify Advanced | £259 | £344 | Online card rate 1.5% + 25p |
| Shopify Plus | Not listed | From £1,800 | Online card rate 1.3% + 25p |

Squarespace says its UK prices include estimated VAT. Shopify's UK pricing page doesn't say either way. Squarespace card payments cost 2.0% + £0.25 on Basic and Core, falling to 1.5% + £0.25 on Advanced.

A year on Squarespace Core costs £20.40 × 12 = £244.80. A year on Shopify Basic costs £19 × 12 = £228 before card fees. At 2% + 25p, a £50 online sale costs £1.25 in fees, or 2.5% of the sale.

DIY builders are the most common choice. In Clutch's 2025 small business survey, 41% of small business websites ran on DIY builders such as Wix and Squarespace, 34% on WordPress or Shopify and 12% were custom-built. Startups.co.uk puts a DIY WordPress site at £36 to £432 a year, depending on hosting, apps and template.

## Freelancer or agency: what each costs
A UK freelance web designer charges £25 to £50 an hour and a small agency £50 to £150, according to Startups.co.uk's March 2026 guide. Clutch's reviews put UK web design firms at $50 to $99 an hour, below the $100 to $149 typical in the US.

| Who builds it | Hourly rate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Offshore company | £10 to £25 | Startups.co.uk |
| Freelance web designer | £25 to £50 | Startups.co.uk |
| Small web agency | £50 to £150 | Startups.co.uk |
| Large web agency | £75 to £200+ | Startups.co.uk |
| UK web design firm, from Clutch reviews | $50 to $99 | Clutch |
| Builder specialists (Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Shopify, WordPress) | $25 to $49 | Clutch |

Startups.co.uk attributes its hourly rates to the web agency Chameleon Studios. For whole projects it gives £300 to £1,000 for a basic site from a web designer and £10,000+ for a custom or bespoke one. It also estimates a typical small business project at about 12 weeks of agency labour, which it prices at £6,000 to £96,000.

Clutch says web design agencies typically charge $2,000 to $100,000. Most projects reviewed on Clutch cost under $10,000, so a smaller number of large builds must pull the $38,105.39 average up. In Clutch's 2025 survey, 45% of small business sites were built by outsourced partners, 37% by in-house teams and 8% by owners.

The spread comes from scope more than page count. Custom design, booking and payment flows, integrations with a CRM or accounting tool, copywriting and SEO each add hours.

## Running costs after launch
A self-hosted site costs £28 to £320+ a year for a domain and hosting, before apps, security or SEO. A Squarespace plan costs £172.80 to £1,137.60 a year on annual billing and includes hosting.

| Running cost | Typical UK cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name | £8 to £20+ a year | Startups.co.uk |
| Hosting, if you don't use a builder | £20 to £300+ a year | Startups.co.uk |
| Security | £0 to £1,000+ a year | Startups.co.uk |
| Apps and plugins | £0 to £100+ a month | Startups.co.uk |
| Themes | £0 to £400+ once | Startups.co.uk |
| Images | £20 to £150+ a month | Startups.co.uk |
| SEO specialist | £150 to £1,200+ a month | Startups.co.uk |

The domain and hosting figure is £8 + £20 = £28 at the low end and £20 + £300 = £320 at the high end. Squarespace's range is £14.40 × 12 = £172.80 for Basic and £94.80 × 12 = £1,137.60 for Advanced.

SEO can be the largest running cost. At £150 to £1,200+ a month, it comes to £1,800 to £14,400+ a year, more than the £300 to £1,000 Startups.co.uk gives for a basic site. Startups.co.uk gives no separate figure for maintenance, so ask any provider to list what a monthly fee covers. That list should name hosting, software updates, security patches, content edits, support hours and who holds the domain.

## How long a website takes to build
A typical small business site takes about 12 weeks of agency work, according to Startups.co.uk. Clutch says most web design projects reviewed on its platform last 7 months.

Two things shorten any build: a written page list, and finished copy and photos on day one. Without them, the build waits on content and approvals.

## What a website needs now that AI search reads it
AI answer engines quote text they can fetch, read and check. A small business site needs its content in the HTML, fast pages, direct answers near the top and the same company facts on every page. None of this needs special files.

### Put the text in the HTML
OpenClaw's web fetch tool sends a plain HTTP request and does not execute JavaScript, so text that only appears after scripts run is invisible to it. Google says it can process JavaScript content that isn't blocked, but calls JavaScript-heavy sites more complex to optimise. Server-rendered or static pages avoid both problems.

### Keep pages fast
In SE Ranking's November 2025 study of 216,524 pages, pages with a First Contentful Paint under 0.4 seconds averaged 6.7 ChatGPT citations. Pages slower than 1.1 seconds averaged 2.1. The study shows correlation, not cause.

### Answer the question near the top
Bing's February 2026 webmaster guidelines tell sites to state facts directly, keep each URL to one topic, put essential information high on the page and use clear, consistent names. In the SE Ranking study, pages with 19 or more data points averaged 5.4 citations against 2.8 for pages with few. Pages updated within three months averaged 6.0 against 3.6. Put prices, service areas, opening hours and contact details in plain text, not only in images or PDFs.

### Keep company facts consistent
Use the same company name, address, phone number and service list on every page and profile. Google says no special schema.org structured data is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, though structured data still helps with rich results. Google also says you don't need AI text files such as llms.txt, or Markdown copies, for Google Search.

### Let the AI crawlers in
OpenAI says sites that opt out of its OAI-SearchBot crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply. Check that a firewall or bot-protection setting isn't blocking search crawlers. Bing's guidelines add that none of this guarantees a citation.

## How Yarigai builds websites and apps
Yarigai builds websites, lead capture and booking flows, and iOS, Android and web apps, inside the client's own accounts. The client owns the code, the data and the accounts from day one, and the client pays hosting bills at cost.

1. A free 30-minute scope call on Google Meet. The client keeps the notes whether they hire Yarigai or not.
2. A blueprint of about a week, credited to the build, with a written plan, a clickable prototype, the monthly running cost, a fixed price and the payback maths.
3. The build, 2 to 6 weeks in the client's accounts, with a demo of working software every week.
4. Optional monthly care that the client can cancel in any month and keep everything.

Yarigai's founder, Deniz Sancar, built 38-0-0, a football squad-draft game that reached No. 1 in the UK App Store's top free games, above Fortnite. It has more than 1M downloads and once had 435,098 players in a single day. Yarigai also built and runs Fighter Dynasty, an MMA career game on web, iOS and Android, and Basketball Dynasty, rated 4.5 stars on the App Store.

Yarigai does not publish prices and quotes a fixed price after the one-week blueprint. The guarantee reads "If the build isn't profitable for you, we won't build it." See [websites and apps](/services/websites-and-apps) for the service, and [build or buy](/guides/build-vs-buy-saas) for when a custom build beats a subscription.

## Common questions
### How much does a 5-page website cost in the UK?
Startups.co.uk puts a basic site from a web designer at £300 to £1,000 and a custom or bespoke site at £10,000+. Custom design, booking, payments and copywriting push a 5-page site towards the higher figure more than the page count does. Most web design projects on Clutch cost under $10,000.

### Is Wix or Squarespace good enough for a small business?
For many businesses, yes. In Clutch's 2025 survey, 41% of small business websites ran on DIY builders such as Wix and Squarespace. A builder gets harder to justify when you need custom booking rules, a client portal or integrations its app store doesn't offer.

### Who owns my website if I leave my web designer?
Whoever holds the domain registration, the hosting account and the code. Ask for all three in your name before work starts, with admin logins for the builder or content management system.

### How much does website hosting and maintenance cost a year?
Startups.co.uk puts hosting at £20 to £300+ a year and a domain at £8 to £20+ a year, and builder plans include hosting. It gives no separate maintenance figure, so ask each provider to list what its monthly fee covers.

### Will a new website get me found on Google or ChatGPT?
Not by itself. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and Bing's guidelines say GEO doesn't guarantee citations. UK SEO specialists charge £150 to £1,200+ a month, according to Startups.co.uk.

### Does my website need an llms.txt file?
Not for Google. Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or Markdown to appear in Google Search, and that Google Search doesn't use them. Clear text in the page's HTML matters more.

### How much does a Shopify store cost a month in the UK?
Shopify UK plans cost £19 to £259 a month on yearly billing and £25 to £344 billed monthly, with Plus from £1,800 a month, as of November 2026. Online card sales add 2% + 25p on Basic, falling to 1.3% + 25p on Plus.
